Kim Davis
Kim Davis loves to teach, and it is this love for teaching and her community that makes her a wonderful computer lab mentor.
Originally from California, Kim moved to her husband’s native home in Braxton County, West Virginia in 1993. Her family is heavily involved in the fire department. Her husband is the captain and her son, Theron, is a junior firefighter.
Being aware of her background in education at Sutton Elementary School, Kim was approached by the fire department to mentor the computer center.
"Watching as community members learn how to use a computer and realize what they have been missing," Kim mentioned as one of the things that keeps her volunteering. "Really just being able to reach out to the community and offer them a service and an opportunity to better themselves. Having the computer lab has been a great experience and I am looking forward to the future and getting more member of the community participating in our computer lab and classes."
The Flatwoods VFD Computer Center hosted a youth technology camp last summer. Kim added excitedly "children are not afraid of computers, and they just really took off and had a great time learning new things."
Kim believes that the computer lab has made a huge impact on her community. "Not often do you really have an opportunity to do something that you believe in. I feel the community outreach that the lab provides is one of the best things that has happened in rural counties in West Virginia. It gives us the resources to provide a much needed service to the community. Getting the word out to the public about the many courses and services the computer labs can provide keeps me volunteering.”
