Kim Davis

Kim Davis loves to teach, and it is this love for teaching and her community that makes her a wonderful computer lab mentor.

Originally from California, Kim moved to her husband’s native home in Braxton County, West Virginia in 1993. Her family is heavily involved in the fire department. Her husband is the captain and her son, Theron, is a junior firefighter.

Being aware of her background in education at Sutton Elementary School, Kim was approached by the fire department to mentor the computer center.

Adam Balasis

Though Adam Balasis is a Florida native, his West Virginia roots run deep in McDowell County. Balasis’ paternal grandfather emigrated from Greece to make a fresh start in the town of Kimball, which was founded 100 years ago as a railroad maintenance center to serve the booming coal industry.

Adam remembers making many visits as a child to Kimball, WV to visit family and the family restaurant, Ya’Sou, a Greek-American restaurant meaning “To your health,” which has been a staple in Kimball since 1945.

Christopher Neace

Assistant Fire Chief of the Buffalo Creek Fire Department in Logan County, Christopher Neace, is a West Virginia native who left the state and returned. “West Virginia is home, it is where my family is,” says Neace. He moved to Indiana with his mother at age eight, and it was there that he became interested in being a firefighter. At the age of 15, Neace began his 15-year service as a firefighter while in Indiana in the cadet program.

Charlotte and Eric Squires

Despite being under 30 years old, Eric and Charlotte Squires—husband and wife—have 17 years of combined fire fighting experience. At 16, Eric joined the Gilmer County Ambulance Squad and Fire Department. At 15, Charlotte joined the fire department in nearby Lewis County. Years later, when the two fire departments from Lewis and Gilmer Counties joined forces to fight a fire at a large sorority house in their area, Eric and Charlotte met for the first time. They have been fighting fires together and serving as EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) ever since.

Aaron Dickerson

Even though he’s only 17, Aaron Dickerson is no stranger to the Wharton-Barrett Volunteer Fire Department of Boone County, West Virginia. Aaron joined in 2008 when his high school made community service mandatory for graduation, thinking it would be a good way to get hours.  Since joining, he has accumulated over 500 hours, much more than the required amount.  A third generation fire fighter, Aaron has lived near the station all his life. His grandfather is the Assistant Chief and his father is the Captain.

Nila Bland

For 40 years, Nila Bland has volunteered to make her community in Pendleton County, West Virginia a more pleasant place to live.  Growing up in Franklin, after she got married Nila moved to Brandywine, home of South Fork Volunteer Fire Department. Nila’s volunteer activities stretch far beyond the fire department though, having served on the Treasure Mountain Festival Association for over 20 years, even serving as its president at one point, volunteering for her church, and for the extension homemakers.
